Speak & Spell
Speak & Spell is back! with 100+ new phrases :)
Launched by Texas Instruments in June 1978, this electronic educational toy became a pop-culture icon later on, as it kept appearing in the compositions of Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, Röyksopp, Coldplay... just to name a few. Depeche Mode's 1981 debut album, Speak & Spell, is named after this device. Speak & Spell was the device of choice to "phone home" (cit. E.T.), thus becoming an immortal image in the mind of anyone born in the '80s.
Speak & Spell deployed a single-chip voice synthesizer, the TMC0280. The speech synthesis data was stored on a pair of 128 Kbit PMOS ROMs - an impressive achievement for the time; it was named an IEEE Milestone in 2009.
